Bitter Resolve: Bows and Arrows Against The Lightning

"Bows And Arrows Against The Lightning" is a well known phrase from H.G Wells masterpiece War of the Worlds, a statement made by the artilleryman, which comments on mans futile response to the Martian invasion. In all reality it was a powerful metaphor socially commenting on the fears and prejudice of mankind's evolution during the Victorian era as was the book! The first statement is the way cooler of the two though, but I will leave you to decide which path you want to go down.

American Doom trio that is Bitter Resolve, a band that comprises of Robert Walsh, Lauren Fitzpatrick and R. Corey Dial have taken stock from such influential bands as Black Sabbath, St. Vitus, Monster Magnet and Trouble, which in all honesty are comparisons that can be well heard in their presentation.

Although the album is only short, the trio have crammed much in, they have carved a balance of doom laden and fuzz toned guitar work that has been underpinned by some rather excellent bass and drum interactions although at times this approach does sound formulaic. To balance this out the band have included some rather exemplary and melodic guitar passages which breaks the whole approach down, something that is very noticeable on the closing segment of the opening song A Day Without Fairies. It's not long though before the band drop back into their formulaic approach as they drift through …An Arch That Spans Regret. The outstanding tracks here though are the quirky album closer Large Hardon Collider that really tips its hat to Black Sabbath and Perfect Alignment.

The one thing that I would pick up on with this release is that at times it does at times sound somewhat samey, the album does not have that wow factor, which is a bit of a shame really, but when the likes of Perfect Alignment and Large Hardon Collider hit the airwaves you can forgive them, although these moments aren't for me regular enough.

This is a bad album per se, it does share some highlights with its listener, unfortunately these moments do not outweigh the more mundane approach presented.
