Frames: In Via

German act Frames return with their latest release of instrumental post rock, prog, and alternative rock, titled In Via. If you loved the dreamy Mozaik, chances are the wealth of colors and textures on In Via will effect you pretty much the same way.

In Via is filled with semi-lengthy songs that feature lilting guitar chords, spacey keys, and meditative rhythms. Tranquil at times ("Encounter") and more aggressive at others ("Departure"), this is an album more about textures than anything else. Each track kind of morphs into the next, lulling the listener into a trance with the intoxicating soundscapes rather than nip at your senses with constantly changing or shifting arrangements. To some ears, this formula might be a tad boring, and to be honest, there were times during In Via that I found my interest waning. Thankfully, tunes like "Stir" and "Eris" contain some very intelligent passages that channel both the heavy bombast and the atmospheric quite nicely.

This is all expertly played and presented, but the success of In Via with the listener is going to rely just how much textures you like in your progressive rock. In Via has enough to recommend for those that love lush instrumental prog & post rock.
