Emmure is one of those bands whose popularity seems to defy the obvious, that deep down they are just a very ordinary metalcore/deathcore band. Victory Records sure doesn't care, as these guys are one of the cash cows of their roster, but Slave to the Game, which is somewhat of a concept album dealing with comic book and video game themes, isn't much of a departure or progression from past efforts. Slave to the Game is cookie-cutter deathcore, filled with hate-spewing growls, screams, and bellows, the occasional clean vocal passage, punishing breakdowns, and songs that basically all sound fairly similar to each other. That's not to say that a few of these don't really kick some ass, cause they do, especially "Bison Diaries" and "Blackheart Reigns", but for the most part this Brooklyn horde have churned out another platter of generic sounding 'core that really doesn't stimulate all that much.
If metalcore/deathcore is tbe be-all end-all of your world, by all means go seek this out, but for the rest of the world you can pass on this and your life will be all the better for it.
