Stuka Squadron: Tales Of The OST
With tongues firmly in cheeks Stuka Squadron (who take their moniker from the fighter pilots of the blitzkreig campaign) are based around the gimmick of the five band members being blood drinking vampires from the time of World War II. With individual names including Gravedigger Cox and Sir Graveghoul Terrorsound on guitars and vocalist James Duke Fang-Begley they are very much about entertainment with a capital E. The website expands further on the back story by explaining how the squadron was formed in 1930's Germany and the band keep in character for their promotional campaign. All too often with gimmicks in metal there is a feeling that is to mask the technical limitations of the musicians but thankfully there is a lot more to Stuka Squadron as musically they press all of the right buttons.
This is traditional metal that draws from Iron Maiden's Powerslave / Piece Of Mind era with the songs taking on the epic storytelling narrative that will be embraced by fans of the classic 80's sound. The sounds of air raid sirens, radio transmissions and conflict are combined with the sinister atmosphere of the undead as Stuka Squadron unleash a succession of rousing call to arms anthems complete with dueling guitars, screaming vocals and powerful hooks and melodies. "On The Volga Bridge", "One Eyed God King" and "We Drink Blood" are just three of the highlights across an album that is consistently strong throughout. Great fun and highly recommended.
