Eternal Deformity: The Beauty of Chaos
In a surprising surge of quality, Eternal Deformity's Beauty of Chaos pins to the table all the best elements of their past and tastefully enhances them. I'm happy to say that their orchestral bits are more warranted (thankfully confirmed in the actually functional "Intro"), always an asset in these days of clouded symphonics, and the vocals, clean and growled, are more comfortable and less amateur in composition. However, the sequences in which the music feels almost loose, like open time signatures of "Lifeless" or the clean verses of "Pestilence Claims No Higher Purpose", show a lot of potential, for the actual performance of those parts exhibits attention to their instruments and venturing away from the tick tock snap of customary metal riffage will only help them form their distinction. There's a time for both, but the mechanical verses of "The Sun" and "Caught Out Lying" may have been enriched by this.
That's not to say their metal riffage is boring. "Lifeless" also features some playful and driving guitar work, the interplay in "Caught Out Lying" between the guitars and keys strengthens the song's transitions, and "The Holy Decay" manages to be heavy in the old school sense with just it's clean guitars, so the band seems on top of their game in this department. However, in their orchestral department, there's just a quick note that might help overall in the long run. The symphonic march of "The Beauty of the Ultimate End" leaves room for a little more exploration, for as is it, while catchy, isn't dense compositionally. It also relies too much on melodeath riffing to carry it along instead of exploring the watershed of classical marches, or even ballet, just as an example of more interesting combinations.
It's clear that their headed in the right direction. The album art almost hints at, in vein, something more watery, à la wet sound effects for keys perhaps, and it would be cool to see them get a little bit more thematic in that sense, which would align with their cirque tendencies. I should probably mention that it isn't a one-listen throwaway. Relish this, metal fans will.
