Recorded in Hamburg, Germany on February 24th, 1985, this concert featuring the amazing talents of late blues-rock guitar legend Roy Buchanan is the latest release in the Rockpalast series put out by the folks at WDR and MVD, and a must see for fans of the guitarist. Playing a scorching 13 song set with his band, Buchanan, along with his trusty Fender Telecaster, rips through classics like "Green Onions", "Peter Gunn", "Messiah (Messiah Will Come Again)", "Night Train", and the searing "Roy's Blues (Roy's Bluz)". Many of the tunes here are instrumental, and allow for Roy to solo with reckless abandon, showing off his stellar technique as well as blues feel. It's very cool to see that most of the wild sounds he gets out of his guitar are created by using his hands, the pick, and the volume & tone knobs on his guitar, relying more on organic ways rather than using an array of pedals like many of his peers. Watching him firing off nimble leads on "Thing in G" and "Sweet Dreams" is a thing of beauty, and makes it all the more sad that he died from hanging himself in a jail cell after an arrest for drunken conduct less than 3 years later.
The video & audio quality is pretty good throughout, though Roy's vocals on a few of the songs seem to be recorded really low, which in itself is not a bad thing as his voice is really the only weak part of this concert. Otherwise, this is a great concert of a guitar legend in his prime shortly before he left us way too soon.
