Residents, The: Demons Dance Alone (DVD)

The Residents have a reputation for being avant guardians but this disc proves that while the band members do have a penchant for bizarre stage garb and a flair for the theatrical that would make Antonin Artaud proud (and a little confused), they're really, at the end of the week, another group of musicians capable of human complexities and making fine, fine music. Captured here live in New York late in 2002, the band sounds in peak form on tracks such as "Life Would Be Wonderful" (a moving/haunting slice of Broadway) and "Mickey Macaroni" (one that you'll have to hear for yourself). The Residents may be a band of aging hippies, a band of weirdoes or a band of gypsies, but they're one of our best. Long live The Residents.
