Sep7ember: Strange Ways Of Going Home
Germany based Alt-Rock band, Sep7ember have released a killer record with their latest effort, Strange Ways Of Going Home (SPV). With a bit of flair that is reminiscent of 80'sPower Pop, a dash of Punk angst and all with a modern Alt-tinged flavor, Sep7ember have a really cool sound. This 13 track record (including a bonustrack!) is flat out good.
Full of Alt-Rock Radio friendly tunes with jangly open voiced guitar picking, Sep7ember carve out some great tunes. With slight Pop elements of U2 and the more rockerness of Bush with vocals by Boris Pillmann that remind me at times of both Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree and one of the silly guys from Oasis, Pillmann has a nice and almost soothing voice that blends perfect with the music. His staccato styled vocals coupled with the twin guitar work of Guido Dobrautz and Bernd Siedler set the tone of the band. Killer tunes like the soulful "So", CD opener, "View Into Blur", or the energized uptempo of "One Thing" and the darker feel of "Rocket To Somewhere", all of these songs will get stuck in your head and showcases the strong songwriting that these guys possess. Production is top notch with the rhythm section of drummer Hakan Cetin and bass player Bill Peckham coming through loud and clear and very tight, with vocals blasting through and the overall mix is spot on.
I had never heard of Sep7ember before and was very pleasantly surprised with the music that these guys make. I found Strange Ways Of Going Home to be a breath of fresh air. There are slight elements of familiarity to their overall sound, while never really sounding like anyone at the same time. Sep7ember are very melodic and the mix of that Power Pop, Alt-Rock thing is quite good. I really enjoy this record, so much so, that it hasn't been very far from my ears in the past few weeks or so.
