Here's what you need to know about Dust to Dust, the third album from the French power/speed-metal band with the gall to call itself Heavenly: It's a three-chapter, 13-song concept album inspired by Bram Stoker's Dracula and Anne Rice's Interview With A Vampire about a man bitten by a vampire who then wanders through the centuries fighting the urge to become a blood-sucking creature himself. If you're with me so far, it's beneficial to know that the second and third chapters are much more musically satisfying than the first chapter, with better overall songwriting and more cohesion. This is over-the-top stuff that features guest Ferdy Doernberg (Axel Rudi Pell, Rough Silk) on keyboards and producers Philip Coloditti and Sascha Paeth (Angra, Kamelot) twiddling the knobs. In short, on Dust to Dust Heavenly manages to sound like Blind Guardian crashing a Stratovarius/Freedom Call/Edguy triple bill – yet somehow not quite as intriguing as each of those bands on their own.
