Snider, Dee: Dee Does Broadway
When this one arrived in the review pile from our esteemed Editor I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Dee Snider, the shock rocker who led the rallying call against Tipper Gore and co, caused mayhem on BBC's flagship chart show Top Of The Pops with "I Am (I'm Me)" and declared that "We're Not Gonna Take It" croons his way through a collection of theatrical standards including "Mack The Knife" and "Luck Be A Lady Tonight". It all begs the question just how bad was this going to be?
Thankfully, however, Snider takes the original versions and adds his own twist – dark and sinister on "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd", blazing guitars for "The Joint Is Jumpin'" and snarling his way through "Cabaret" with that trademark bravado and swagger. Add in plenty of lush orchestration and smooth arrangements and it can be said that Dee Does Broadway in far from being the train wreck many would have feared. Certainly not an album I will be rushing to listen to (ever) again but entertaining enough in its own way. Now this is out of the way please can we have Twisted Sister back in Europe in 2013.
