Jenx: Enuma Elish

Despite being French, Jenx doesn't do much new for the industrial world. Named after the Babylonian tale for the origin of power, the record doesn't do much for its inspiration either. Musically speaking, they tend to incorporate a lot of metal and more often than not when the metal is the main style this hurts their approach by being derivative as opposed to when they stick to industrial ideas, such as "The Loss" or "Burning Pride," songs that feature interesting electronic bits mainly because the metal isn't there to suffocate all the effects. "The Loss" is particularly good in standing out from the rest of the album since it has a more tribal feel but compressed. "Blood Obsession" is peculiar in that it splits metal and industrial 50/50 and works fairly well, but would be more powerful with more volume dynamic.

Aside from somewhat annoying lyrics and weak screams, the record is listenable for industrial fans only. Some post-metal people would probably dig the metal parts for some reason, but their attempts at blending metal with this wouldn't be a problem if the parts didn't all sound the same, which they did right on "Sycamore pt. II" and "Blood Obsession". The band would be better off with less vocals in general as well; industrial isn't meant to be carried by vocals but by simple, yet powerful rhythms and interesting sounds, of which are pretty lacking here.
