The band with one of the most bizarre names in metal are back with their latest slice of thrash & melodic death metal, titled Ghostmaker. In their short career, Rumpelstiltskin Grinder have taken their love for the classic Bay Area thrash sound from the '80s and injected a healthy dose of death metal, making for some exciting and enjoyable platters of technical extreme metal. Ghostmaker follows in that same pattern, as the band put forth songs that will please fans of Testament, Exodus, Carcass, Skeletonwitch, Arch Enemy, and Dark Tranquility.
As always, with this style of music, it's about the riffage, and there's tons of crafty bits going on here, especially on tunes like "Cold Haunting Death" and "Nightworms", where fast picked, often times technical passages are fired at the listener, often with blazing leads zig-zagging through the mix for good measure. Vocals are more in the melodic death metal vein than your standard gruff or clean thrash style, but it works just fine giving these tunes a real edge. Nice to hear the band vary things up a bit on the textured & melodic "A Lurking Thief", and the more epic sounding "Get Out Of My Grave/Gigantic Graveyard", with its huge tremelo picked riffs, has a certain Amon Amarth style to it.
As enjoyable as Ghostmaker is, in the end it's not very original, but then again Rumpelstiltskin Grinder never set out to wow the world with their uniqueness. Instead, they vowed to make kick ass extreme metal music, and once again they've succeeded here.
