Sons Of Tonatiuh: Parade Of Sorrow

There seems to be no shortage of stoner/sludge bands coming out of Atlanta, Georgia these days, and Sons of Tunatiuh are the latest to join the fracas. Their brand new CD Parade of Sorrow delivers plenty of doomy, swampy Southern-fried goodness, sort of like a head-on-collision between early Black Sabbath and Eyehategod. A tune like "Plastic Cell" mixes their crust punk leanings with some crushing, down-tuned Sabbathian riffage, while the ominous title track offers monstrous, earth shattering doom at its finest. "One By One" is raunchy, crusty Southern rock with balls, and the near 8-minute "Fallout" features booming riffs, feedback, and agonizing screams.

As with the recent release from a similar styled band Odyssey, Sons of Tonatiuh at times are brought down by their vocals. There's just too much screaming going on here, and when the tempos and arrangements here slow down and get really doomy, the music calls for something other than post-hardcore or punk styled screaming. That being said, there's some real attitude to many of these tracks, and some killer riffs, so if you dig the whole sludge scene you'll want to investigate this one.
