Martyrdod: Paranoia
Swedish crusty nuts Martyrdod have been honing their craft since 2001, mixing death, black and d-beat punk into their crusted mix, and so the latest album from these guys, Paranoia, very much does the job of delivering dense, heavy riffs, ravaged vocals, pummeling drums, and, much more than before, solos that add a sharp edge to the usually blunt simplicity of their attack. Intense and dynamic, Paranoia's urgency doesn't sound as crusted as their previous works, the reason being that Fredrik Nordström has been brought in on production duties. The result is a clearer sound – or at least as clear as crust allows – meaning that the guitars are brighter, sharper even, and the vocals, in their putrid glory, growl along nastily with the boots-with-nails-for-heels-and-toes-straight-to-the-testicles drumming. The production doesn't mean that Martyrdod have compromised their sound – or that of crust – in any way. The hardcore attack sustained throughout Paranoia is a vortex of violence shrouded in melody with more hooks than Peter Pan's worst wet dream. You won't do yourself any favours if you don't pick this up. Essential.
