Jackson – Webber: What It Is
Jackson – Webber is the teaming of two of the UK's best progressive rock musicians from the early 1970s, Roy Webber, formerly lead singer and founder of Wally, and Will Jackson, guitarists for UK prog masters Magna Carta.
Webber describes several visits to Nashville helped inspire him to write again, and he came into contact with Jackson, co-owner of Soundwork's Studios in Leeds. The two had worked and performed together in a band called Trader, as they describe it "many moons ago". The work they did grew into the demos for "What It Is".
Performing on the album with Webber and Jackson are: Andy Whelan, on guitar and mandolin; Graham Kearns, on bass; Mike Bedford, on drums and percussion, and backing vocals from Webber's daughter Holly and George Nicholson.
This is definitely a departure from the kind of music Webber made with Wally, and Jackson made with Magna Carta. The sound has a Southern rock, Nashville influenced sound to it. All the songs are deep with meaning and good lyrics, supported well with good musicianship.
There are few standout tracks. Most of the music sounds similar. "Heartbreaker" is a good template song, which they expand and minimize throughout the album. The piano work on "She Said" is another standout section of the album. The drum work on "In The Night" at the opening is memorable.
If you like good relaxing, slow delivered country music you will love this album. Great for sitting around a camp fire or relaxing as background music.
