Ephel Duath: On Death and Cosmos
The music business is filled with bands that die prematurely. Some go away quietly; others may continue to write songs, but leave fans wishing for the past. Still others return to us completely revived and ready for more life. In the case of Ephel Duath, their death and burial came at the hand of economic hardships and endless line-up changes, the eternal enemies of a band's creative spirit. With On Death and Cosmos, Ephel Duath demonstrates that they are back, strong, and ready to deliver new songs with a renewed energy. Even better, the current line-up is nothing less than a kind of dream team of death metal performers: Davide Tiso (guitar); Karyn Crisis (vocals); Marco Minnemann (drums); Steve DiGiorgio (bass). I really enjoyed listening to this release and I think that other people will, too.
For fans of Death metal, Ephel Duath is an already welcome addition to the lineup of classic acts. This is due, in part, to the fact that their compositions sound like Chuck Schuldiner's work in Death, particularly after Human. Although I thought of Death often as I listened, I really should be careful with my comparison; the songs here really aren't really like Schuldiner's, but they do accomplish similar things. I'm sure that fans will also hear several other influences and sounds here, but, to me, Death was a primary musical parallel. Listeners won't find long, impressive, and intricate guitar solos on this album; nevertheless, they will enjoy the complex guitar parts and terrific bass lines. The vocals were also strong, if occasionally wearing. In any event, On Death and Cosmos is a strong release, one that promises plenty of new life from an already-established band.
