Roarback: Face the Sun EP

Now here's a little something to enjoy. Roarback is a relatively new band out of Denmark and their EP, Face the Sun, is available for free through Bandcamp. Clocking in at just over 15 minutes, there isn't much music here, but what is here is very promising. I was especially impressed with the ways these guys bring out the crunching riffs in their guitar parts. All of the songs have strong riffs; indeed, there are moments on this album when the guitars play with a real head-banging sense of purpose. I bet these parts are popular with audiences at the gigs. Be sure to check out "I Will Find You" for its brief guitar break, a moment that will capture listeners for its heaviness. It ends all too abruptly, though, with the singer yelling--well, I'll let you discover what he says. It's a terrific moment, very heavy metal, if I may hide behind that vague expression. Just check it out; you'll see what I mean.

The rest of the band plays well, but they don't always have the sheer excitement of the crunchy, distorted guitars. At times, the drums are too relentless in the irritating beat, beat, beat, beat, beat, of the snare; a few more fills will keep listeners more engaged. His work on the last track "Warmachine" was terrific. This guy knows how to drum, but his thrash could use a little less of the banging snare. The vocals are your basic death metal growl, nothing new or different, but good enough for the music these guys are writing. I certainly liked the fact that I could actually understand most of the lyrics; how did the singer pull that off? This is an impressive release, well worth a listen.
