Avigal: Unbroken

Aww, the '80s! How I loves me the '80s. The Metal scene flourished and churned out some classic music and some NOT so classic material, as well. Enter the band called Avigal, named after singer, Sammy Avigal, of Jack Starr's Burning Starr & Picture fame. The singer has a very traditional sounding Metal band with some glimpses of Modern Metal thrown in.

Their new disc, Unbroken, contains 14 tracks of material that is mediocre at best. Avigal, the singer, has a pretty good voice, taken in small doses, as most of the material has him straining to reach notes and his OVER use of very extreme vibrato in his voice on almost EVERY note he sings is quite annoying. Avigal the band goes from the classic Metal sound of their song, "Unbroken" to an unbelievably cheesy song like, "Rock it Out", with a chorus that reads, "Keep on, rockin' it out,Rock it out and never stop. Keep on rockin' it out, Rock it out Straight to the top"! Is Bret Michaels in this band with that cheese? Next up is the Power Ballad (YES, I said POWER BALLAD!!), "Thank You", that sounds like they ripped it off from Lita Ford in 1984! But the highlight on this record has to be the song, "Shaman's Song". It sounds like a mix of Mercyful Fate and Diamond Head with the complete N.W.O.B.H.M. vibe. Very cool song.

OK, here's the deal. There isn't much on this record to rave about or anything that hasn't been heard before and done much better than Avigal. The musicianship is quite average, in fact the twin guitar tandem are actually not very good, often teetering on the bad, out of key caterwauling. Their leads tend to go outside of their musical limits and they sound like beginners who are trying to play fast, for the sake of playing fast. The 14 tracks are pretty generic and bland and this doesn't equal greatness, but it IS quite '80s!
