Humbucker: R.O.C.K.S

If you go to the bio section of Humbucker's website it says, "Norwegian classic rock band Humbucker originally formed in 1998. Four guys who wanted to create a band that didn`t just stand still on stage… they wanted to create something visually exciting too, possibly one of the most energetic rock bands in Norway today. In that first year, the band was more or less an AC/DC tribute, playing mostly DC-songs with a Motorhead or Rods tune here and there." This is fairly instructive as there is a distinct AC/DC vibe throughout R.O.C.K.S and as the Australians don't exactly pump out new material these days there's a gap in the market and Humbucker certainly have the tunes to set pulses racing right from the start of the album.

Despite that R.O.C.K.S it by no means just an AC/DC lite album, "Black Nickel" could have come straight off the Strip in 1988 and "Priscilla" sounds remarkably like George Thoroughgood. "Paradise" even sets off as if it wants to be the Georgia Satellites and some of vocalist Jan Anders Boen's phrasings sound like Spike from the (London) Quireboys, all of which adds to the wholesome classic rock goodness available here.

Humbucker: R.O.C.K.S

My Score:

From Norway comes Humbucker, a band highly influenced by '80s hard rock & metal, and their latest release R.O.C.K.S is sure to strike a chord with those who just can't get enough of their old AC/CD, Cinderella, Motley Crue, and Ratt albums. Big riffs, explosive guitar solos, whiskey soaked vocals, and anthemic choruses permeate R.O.C.K.S, so if that sounds like your cup of tea, then please read on.

Opening cuts "The Way I Am" and "Black Nickel" bust out of the gate with plenty of thunder & swagger, as Humbucker have a good way with creating memorable riffs and delivering them with that '80s swagger and pomp that was so common with bands of that era. "Priscilla" has all the bluesy, metallic Southern Rock attitude of Jackyll, complete with slide guitar and plenty of backing vocals, and the furious "Paradise" is like a head on collision between Motorhead and Guns 'n Roses. "There Will Never Be Another" even dips into the White Lion & Dokken playbook, complete with some very nice acoustic guitar work. From there it's one bluesy, hard rock romp after another, all of them decent though pretty unoriginal. You have to give the band credit however as they've managed to take the listener back to a beloved era in the history of rock that had a pretty short shelf life but still managed to pump out some memorable music.
