Swanee River: Smoking Jacket

Irish quartet Swanee River are all about pure old school blues based rock n' roll that lasts from the moment the first kick ass guitar-driven track explodes into life to the last. The raw and infectious enthusiasm is more than matched by the frazzled rock voice of Steven Horner, whose vocals comes across as a cross between Bon Scott and Noddy Holder. The sheer energy of Smoking Jacket, the bands first full length release, suggests that Swanee River are certain to be a real treat to see live, rocking their retro sound. Recently signed to the Rocksector label, that Swanee River have been touring the UK with original AC/DC frontman Dave Evans and getting rave reviews comes as no surprise. It's refreshing that some bands can just ignore the latest fashions, stick to a style that they believe in, and do it so exceptionally well.

At times "("Blue Moon Rising", "Don't Follow Me") there's definitely a late 60s/early 70s American rock feel to the record, think along the lines of Creedence Clearwater Revival and you will get the picture; and despite being very much a rock album, there's still enough quality to prevent Smoking Jacket from even remotely becoming monotonous. From "Young Blood" to "Long One Tonight" this is vibrant and high quality classic rock, with ten let-your-hair-down tracks. Five star reviews are something of a premium here but Swanee River have released hands down the best debut album I've heard this year and one of the best albums of 2012 full stop.
