Brokaw: Interiors
Interiors is the debut from Seattle four piece band Brokaw, out now on the new Good to Die Records label. Instantly you'll get a little feeling of deja vu once Interiors begins, as the metal/hardcore/funk/punk/rap thing that Brokaw have going on will bring you back to the '90s when Rage Against the Machine and Clutch first hit the scene with their brand of crossover music. Most of the songs here are short, politically charged numbers, noisy at times, filled with angst and aggression, but thankfully the band inject some funky grooves from time to time to mix things up. All too often though these songs get stuck on a riff or a groove and the band beats it to death, which is a shame cause they can certainly play (bassist Stuart Dahlquist is a joy to listen to), and a few of the tracks really do work, like "Politicians By the Pool" and the raucous "You Didn't Invent Sex". In the end, too many repetitive arrangements bog down Interiors, and the question begs, do we really need another band mixing metal, hardcore, punk, funk and rap in 2012, when this sort of thing died over a decade ago?
