Deadkill: Deadkill EP

With their short debut, Deadkill has finally done something that many Van Halen fans have been anticipating for a long time--helping make the call sign 5150 (police code in California for a mentally unstable person) actually seem interesting again. The code never really applied to Van Halen in those days anyway. Honestly, songs like "Dreams" were too rational, too hopeful, to make us really think that Eddie and the boys were really up to anything dangerous. Sure, Van Halen was a party band, but it really takes a group of old-school punks to help us realize that they didn't really mean it--not like this. This album is something much more dangerous and interesting. With four short songs, all of them about anger, fighting, drinking, drugs, and insanity, Deadkill has given new energy to a scene that has long since gone away.

I am a long-term fan of punk rock and this is definitely a release to shelve next to classic acts like Black Flag, the Circle Jerks, and others. No, Deadkill won't bring back the glory days of 80s punk, but they will give fans something new to hear in the same vein--something that I always consider to be a good thing. It's worth checking out.
