Sweden's The Rockford Heroes, who raised some eyebrows with their impressive EP Light Scares earlier this year, are back with another one in the form of The White EP, which contains 4 songs that combine their love for classic '70s hard rock & AOR, '80s melodic metal, and modern day power metal. No, The Rockford Heroes aren't very original, but give these guys credit for creating music that's pretty damn enjoyable. Lead singer Dan Hultstrand has a really good voice, sounding almost like Sebastian Bach at times, though it's heavily accented which might be a turn off for some. The music features plenty of crunchy riffs and some keyboard textures, and with possible influences ranging from Queensryche, Edguy, Styx, Rainbow, Loudness, Skid Row, Dream Theater, Queen, Angra, and Iced Earth, the band is kind of all over the map but it works. The two songs that bookend this quick little EP, "Gold Encircles the Altar" and "The Fools Realm", are easily best of the four, complete with epic styled arrangements and layers of vocals, plus some surprising hooks.
Honestly, each tune here is well done and fun, providing for some headbanging moments but also with enough sophistication and melodies to also appeal to the prog, hard rock, and AOR crowd. Now if only these guys can put together a strong full length and get a label to back them the world will then get a hefty dose of what they are all about.
