Kelly, Scott and the Road Home: The Forgiven Ghost in Me

The third solo album from Scott Kelly of Neurosis fame, The Forgiven Ghost in Me is a collection of acoustic songs evolving around some mostly minimalistic but very expressive guitar work and Scott Kellys singing, which has a certain vulnerability to it. The songs are in a way quite mellow, but just because they are acoustig doesn't mean that they are weak or light-hearted. In fact, every single song on the album is extremely dark and melancholic (with 'Within It Blood' being the best track on the album for my money). Although stylistically somewhat removed from Nick Cave's classic, The Forgiven Ghost in Me makes me thing of Murder Ballads at time – probably because it has the same dark atmosphere, and because of the slight similarity in their voices. Kind of a modern day Johnny Cash, Scott Kelly has commited a dark and introspective, yet compelling and expressive album in The Forgiven Ghost in Me.
