Brainwashed: Wrecked

There are quite a few bands out of Poland these days; those I've heard are all worth checking out, if for no other reason than to expand one's sense of how expansive the metal scene really is. Of the half-dozen or so recordings from Polish bands I've reviewed, I can honestly say that most of them demonstrate some pretty exciting musicianship. Brainwashed is no exception: they play with fierceness and intensity. I was especially taken with the track "Breaking the Chains." For those of you who remember actually buying Dokken albums (I do!), this is not a cover of that classic tune. The lyrics reminded me of the old song, though (how many ways, honestly, are there to sing "I'm breaking the chains"?). What's exciting about this track, though, is the quick, driving, guitar riff that moves listeners from verse to verse. The chorus is a little goofy by comparison, but how could they have kept up with the relentless force of the guitars, anyway? The other tracks feature the same intensity from the guitars. Be sure to listen to the opening track "Bringing Out of Death" for a good example of the rhythmic riffing these guys bring.

For those of you wondering what kind of metal this is, I would probably describe it as thrash, though the solos don't necessarily match the classic playing found in bands like Testament, Exodus, and others. Such classic bands are exceptional, though. The solo lines here are pretty solid and warrant a close listen. These guys are especially good when they're playing fast. When things slow down, and they occasionally do, the band sounds like it can't wait to get back to the faster tempos.
