Opeth: Lamentations (DVD)

While not perfect, Opeth's first foray into DVD land is a visual and aural feast that really showcases the talents of this premier Swedish progressive metal band. The first half of the concert (recorded at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire in 2003) features the album Damnation played in its entirety. For those who have not heard this album, this was Opeth's quite, introspective prog-rock opus, more about dark yet lovely pastoral melodies and arrangements, featuring acoustic guitars, Mellotrons, and all clean vocals. While this is a fine album to sit home and relax to with headphones, in a live setting played in its entirety can be a little draining. The crowd seemed to be into it, but you can tell they were just itching for the heavy stuff. Which did come, after the full Damnation part of the set concluded. Here, Opeth rip into some tunes from Blackwater Park and Deliverance, the other two recent albums. It's odd that the band chose to only play material from the most recent three albums, but the fact that the bands songs are so long might have been a major factor in that decision. Still, seeing songs like "The Drapery Falls", "The Leper Affinity" and "Master's Apprentices" in full live fury is worth the price of admission alone.
Now that Opeth are on Roadrunner Records, perhaps a future live DVD which will feature songs from the entire history might surface. For now, this one will do just fine.

This dvd is perfect. I think this concert is a classic, i can compare this live performance with the best live concerts , like the made in japan of deep purple.
Here is Opeth in their best moment, with Lopez in the drums, and a passional Akerfeldt. When you see the Royer Albert Hall DVD, Akerfeldt sings worst and seems a little "cold" without the same emotion, then Axenrot dont have soul to play anything.
I think Danmation is an excellent album, and shows the melodic style of Opeth. Then when the band returns, the metal stuff is more brutal. Master aprentice was the best song to start this extreme and sick metal set

Opeth continues to astound the record-buying public with this nugget, featuring a live set from London's Shepherd's Bush Empire in 2003. There, on that stage, the outfit whips out fine material from its recent career-making discs Deliverance and Damnation with dashes of Blackwater Park. Hardly KISS, Opeth still has its paces down well and you get swept away not by the constant running around of a maddened lead singer but by the music itself, which resonates long after the concert has come to an end.
