Barreca, Marc: Tremble

Light on musicality, but ideal as an inside-on-a-rainy-day soundtrack, the latest collection of Marc Barreca's instrumental and found sounds features (according to the Palace of Lights label's website) "multiple electronic and acoustic sources. … The music here often reaches thresholds of a lush beauty, unexpectedly escaping from a diversity of pitches and timbres to become a solid, seemingly stable orbit of pure sound."

That much is true, and fans of ambient music will find Barreca's shimmering piano and glassy chimes — occasionally accompanied by what sound like rainsticks and splashing water — evocative of the album's title. This can be mesmerizing and relaxing stuff. But if you prefer any semblance of melody, look elsewhere.

Barreca, Marc: Tremble

My Score:

That music that the listener will find on Tremble, the latest from Marc Berreca, often times will be hard to classify as such, as this miasma of electronic and acoustic sounds blips, beeps, floats, and trickles through the speakers with hardly an assemblance of melody or structure in sight. With this kind of ambient material though, that's generally the point, as the haunting, futuristic soundscapes created by Berreca are meant more to create a mood, and fill up the background with sonic repitition and spacey tranquility, rather than make you stand up and take notice of a catchy melody or impressive musical passage. Most of Tremble meanders on that way, as one track segues into another, barely pushing the listener to any experience whatsoever that might be challenging or even enjoyable. That being said, there is an audience for this sort of thing, and you can't deny a sort of 'intoxicating' element that these tracks can bleed if you just close your eyes and allow the looping sounds to take hold of you. Don't expect any sort of 'wow' factor here, but as mind numbing background noise, it does the trick.
