Formed out of the ashes of Canadian technical death metal band Gorguts, Negativa released this self-titled EP in 2006. Somewhat of a supergroup, in addition to ex-Gorguts members Steeve Hurdle & Luc Lemay, the band also included Miguel Valade and Etienne Gallo for this release, but later incarnations also featured former/current members of Ion Dissonance and Augury. The music on display on this 3 song EP is a mixture of the technical wizardry of Gorguts with some ambient and doomy elements. Opener "Chaos in Motion" features plenty of the stop start, noisy characteristics of classic Gorguts, complete with guitar scrapes and trills, while "Taedium Vitae" is more of a slow, death metal/doom track, with ponderous, crushing guitar dirges and wailing vocals, Last track "Rebellion" quickens the pace with pummeling drums and plenty of intricate guitar & bass passages, yet still retaining some melody. It's a shame this band never released anything else, as this EP showed a lot of promise, perhaps not straying too far from the Gorguts formula, but it would have been interesting to see where they would have taken this next. History has it that the band went through various line-up changes, and had gotten some recordings together for a follow-up, but eventually broke up before they could see the light of day. This EP is basically what we have left of their existence.
