Brume d'Automne: Brume d'Automne

Who would have thought quebec nationalism with some Canadian history and a little "batèche" curse could make for a fun record? Athros, the main man from Forteresse, is behind this side-project, and could be described as a less brutal version of that band, but the inevitable comparison is fruitless since the groups have different directives. Brume d'Automne plays around a bit more with tempos and less with minimalism, so in that sense it's akin to the first wave of black metal in terms of attitude, which is why it's fun to listen to. Still a serious and atmospheric record, with hints of folk in both "Traditionnelle IV" and "Saint Eustache" plus what sounds like a prepared piano in "l'Esprit du Courant," there's enough dynamic to distinguish between all the blasting and tremolo picking, and since the vocalist sounds like he's trying to destroy your eardrums and his vocal chords, in a good way of course, you'll pay attention.

The toms need more bass in their mix, and naturally there is no evidence of a bass, but those are the only complaints. It's a harmless record at 40 minutes, which blows by, and there's not a lot to digest, but it's bound to be a highlight for any Canadian black metal fan. Athros' hybrid riff style (see "Le Lieu de la Vengeance") is worth it to anyone really but hopefully this will garner a bit more of an audience than those 20 people at the last black metal show I attended. Don't let the silly man with the guitar on the cover turn you off, unless you're a hipster since that's a selling point. When the crows shout their hate on the final track, the triumphant end, with both members blasting their hearts away, should be enough to sustain another five years until the next record.
