Sylvatica: Mosemanden
Labels are so much fun; here's one to chew on for a while--Progressive / Folk / Death metal. Does that capture your attention or are you more interested in just diving in and considering what the music actually sounds like? If you're like me, the labels are occasionally a little too much to think about. Yes, it helps us know how bands classify their sound, but ultimately every band has to be listened to and has to find an audience that claims to enjoy them.
Before now, I've never heard of Sylvatica, nor do I know too much about them other than that they are out of Denmark and that this album, which dropped in late 2011 I think, was at one time available through Bandcamp as a free download.
The music here is mostly drawn on folk melodies out of Denmark, or at least music that is meant to evoke that tradition. The music is actually pretty cool, especially when the melodic parts are complemented with some nice crunchy power chords. The album moves forward with a pretty even tempo--these guys don't play too fast or too slow, but right there in that slow head-banging pace. The vocals, as is far too common, are too thick and too throaty. I would think that some of the melodies here would sound better with something less harsh. Check out the song "Sylvatica," though, for some sweet melodic lines from the lead guitar.
