With a name like BigDix and a song called "So Hot," it's easy to have low expectations for this Italian band. And as long as you keep that in mind while spinning the 11 songs on Joanna & The Devil, the second album from BigDix, you should be fine.
Opening with the rowdy horn-dog anthem "You Make Me Crazy," these guys abruptly shift gears with less raunchy and mellower fare like "Believe" (a weird tribute to positive thinking) and "Time for Love" (a clumsy attempt at a love song). Singer Matteo Idini's accented voice, which at times recalls a more subtle Lemmy, is better suited to raunch, though, and he comes through on "Devil's Blues," a plodding blues-rocker. "Psychedelic Blues" allows guitarist Fabio Corradi to show off on the album's longest track, while "Cotton Fields" is a rootsy acoustic blues cover of the old Lead Belly tune you'd expect from, maybe, The Black Crowes — not four guys collectively named BigDix.
Joanna & The Devil is an uneven but fun album, provided you're not expecting a whole lot.
