The Finnish band Scythe Of Orion formed in 2006 and released an EP in 2009. Their new release Sun-Dial is their first full length effort. Their music mixes progressive and power metal with melodic rock. The lead vocals of Anu Lamminsaari are quite good as she offers the listener a pretty unique voice. If I was to compare Scythe Of Orion to other bands think a toned down Nightwish with still enough crunch and bombast to keep the music exciting and dramatic. One thing is for sure, a Dream Theater clone this is not.
The title track begins the album on a softer note with delicate piano and strings. The pace is quickened with "Ice Soldiers" where heavy power chords slash against big swells of organ. It's a dramatic slice of progressive metal. My only complaint is at times Anu's vocals are buried in the mix.
The melodic "Perfect Silence" is all catchy choruses with chugging riffs and timely breaks whereas "Listen My Friend" and "Now And Forever" offer a gentler sound with delicate acoustic guitar and lush orchestrations. The violin playing of Maarit Koivisto is right on the mark. The album ending "The Day Of Scythe Of Orion" features more of the band's lush sound with an emphasis on the organic as piano, violin and cello take center stage. It is quite a beautiful ending to what is not your typical metal album.
With Sun-Dial, Scythe Of Orion proves the chops are there as well as some pretty memorable songs. Progressive/power metal fans as well as those leaning towards melodic rock and harder edged pop might want to give Sun-Dial a try.
