Kershaw, Mike: Reason to Believe

Multi-instrumentalist Mike Kershaw, no longer recording under the obscure name "Relocate to Heathrow," played, sang and produced everything on Reason to Believe — and it's clear he's got an electronics fixation. Kershaw's distinct but often monotone voice blends nicely with the synthesizers that dominate these songs, which sometimes sound like they came from a vault housing rejects by the Alan Parsons Project. Songs like "Testament" and "Mask and Cape" incorporate greater use of guitar and reveal more depth to Kershaw's delivery, and the three-part suite "The End of Love and War" suggests a desire to move in an even proggier direction.

This is a pleasant-enough listen. But Reason to Believe lacks much emotion — no doubt thanks to a drum machine and a lack of tempo changes. Plus, at nearly 59 minutes, it's just too long.
