Silver End: Silver End

Bergen, Norway's Silver End have released this little 5 song EP that seems squarely aimed at the American metal market with a sound that takes equally from Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Staind, but surprisingly, also the dreary melancholy of Sweden's Katatonia. Chock full of melodic yet haunting vocals, layers of lilting guitar chords and the occasional heavy riff, and touching atmosphere, , this EP is a pleasant listen despite the clear lack of originality. "Breaking Free" has sure fire hit single written all over it (US fans who loved Staind's early hits will be all over this one), and "Learning the Lesson" takes the emotional gothic touches of current Katatonia and mixes it with some accessible melodies. Some may say that we've heard this all before, and that might be true, but there's no denying that Silver End have a load of talent and know how to write a catchy tune. Are they 10 years too late? Perhaps, but I can still see plenty of kids gobbling this up here in 2012.
