Normally a black metal project, Inferion has recently released Aborted By the Sun which is a melodic death metal release and does not really have anything to do with black metal at all. There is a good explanation though: the EP was originally recorded in 2003
The result is a handful of fiercely aggressive, blastbeat- and growl-filled death metal tracks which has now been released as an Inferion release. Aggressive, yes, but also very melodic. Every track is full of twin-guitar riffs which often involve harmonies and more thrashy features. While not melodeath by any stretch of the imagination, Aborted By the Sun is still best described as melodic death metal and, having more in common with bands like Terra Tenebrae and Cyanotic (the Danish underground band) than the Swedish melodeath bands, Inferion's one-off melodic death metal release is resfreshingly original.
The production is very raw and is more of a demo-quality, but the history of the release taken into account, this is understandable and forgivable – the production even becomes authentic and fascinating in this respect. That being said, I do not think that this will be everybody's cup of tea, because of the production, although the music itself is actually of, I think, very high quality although the mechanical drums are a bit of a turn-off to me.
Fans of Inferion should definitely check this release out, because it shows a very different side of Reyes and is an interesting addition to Inferion's CV, as it were. Also, if you are looking for original melodic death metal, which is not melodeath – and which, if you can live with the raw production, is actually quite good – then you should also give this EP a listen.
