Pride of Lions: Immortal

Say what you like about Pride of Lions' mainman Jim Peterik but he's a busy little so and so. Since he left Survivor, for instance, his erstwhile colleagues have released one record – Reach, whilst Peterik has been pumping out quality releases under the World Stage banner, a solo album (Above the Storm),he's also done a couple of jazzy albums with Lifeforce as well as penning Jimi Jamison's solo platter Crossroads Moment. On top of all that he's also been the driving force behind Pride of Lions alongside the golden larynx of Toby Hitchcock.

There is a school of thought amongst PoL fans that their first album was an utter classic (it is) and that it has all been downhill since then. This isn't a view I subscribe to but if you liked the debut and you like Survivor, in all probability you'll love this. I do.

Immortalis pure melodic rock gold from start to end. I know that some don't like the fact that Peterik sings as much as he does when he's got a talent like Hitchcock on board but heck, he writes the songs so he can do what he likes! Myself, I think their voices counterpoint each other nicely but rqually a gibbon could sing such well-constructed songs (Peterik has even written a book called Songwriting for Dummies) and make them sound great – and Hitchcock has a truly brilliant voice. There are those who find it too operatic and too theatrical but it suits Peterik's uplifting style superbly. I could drone on and give a track-by-track précis of how brilliant each song is but suffice to say, if you've ever liked aspirational, inspirational melodic rock then your album of the year has arrived.
