Circle Of Chaos: Twoheaded Serpent

Twoheaded Serpent is a promising little EP, bringing together five songs for Circle Of Chaos to highlight the strengths of their new vocalist Julian Loaiza. A man who adds an almost metal-core screeeeeem to the melodic death metal Circle Of Chaos create. The band's 2010 debut album passed me by, so how the change of frontmen has altered the Circle sound I'm not sure, but since Loaiza joined the twin guitar attack of Allan Lundholm and HG Hogstrom, bassist Thomas Jonsson and drummer Staffan Lundholm, the quintet have toured extensively. Something which would appear to have paid off. Making Twoheaded Serpent a short, though welcome introduction to a band who sound tight, focused and talented, and who could, with a little fine tuning around the edges, make a lasting impact.

Hailing from Sweden the melodic death attack is no great surprise, but doing things with style and panache takes care of those criticisms, while the unusual stylistic fusion of music and vocals provides a slightly different, imagination capturing vision. Although what does need stepped up before the band release their second full length effort is the variety quotient, as the foot to the floor, with the odd slow section thrown in as the vocals strangulate and spit at full force, can begin to feel samey.

Still, "Fate Of Brutality" convinces through its unrelenting barrage, while "Submission" does show a slightly more refined, dramatic appeal that suites the band extremely well. All five tracks are mixed and mastered by Mike Wead (Candlemass/King Diamond/Mercyful Fate ), so you know that the sound is going to be good, although possibly the band's enthusiasm to showcase their excellent new vocalist has led him to be slightly too front and centre too often. That said, it is a minor gripe about an EP that romps and rips from start to finish suggesting Circle Of Chaos are not far away from being the real deal.
