I'm sure by now that most Joe Bonamassa fans already have the stellar Blu-ray release Beacon Theater-Live From New York, recorded late in 2011 and released earlier this year. Well, now that all important companion double CD has been released, so not only can you watch that fantastic concert on your home theater system but you can also now take the audio version with you just about anywhere. Though there have been numerous live albums released by the guitarist, each one contains (for the most part) different set lists, so having them all is basically essential. With a hot band, and guests like Paul Rodgers, Beth Hart, and John Hiatt, Bonamassa tears through many of his latter day classics plus a few surprises to the delight of the NYC crowd.
If you love Joe's mix of blues and hard rock, you've come to the right place. Sizzling versions of "Slow Train", "Dust Bowl", "You Better Watch Yourself", and "Blue Evil" just bristle with blues emotion and hard rock energy, fueled by Bonamassa's virtuoso guitar playing and powerful vocals. Hart lends her sultry voice to "I'll Take Care of You" and "Sinner's Prayer", while the legendary Rodgers joins the guitarist for dead-on renditions of the Free classics "Walk in My Shadows" and "Fire and Water". These two songs are worth the price of admission alone; Rodgers sounds better than ever, and Bonamassa channels the tone and spirt of the late Paul Kossoff just perfectly. As much as I love Joe in Black Country Communion, if he and Rodgers hooked up for a new band or a modern day version of Free I would be all for it. Throw in the passionate "Mountain Time" and a scorching rendition of "Young Man Blues" (which rivals the way The Who tackled his song back in the late '60s/early '70s), among so many other brilliant tunes, and you have just a winner of a live album from one of our hardest working and most talented American guitar heroes.
