Nubian Rose: Mountain

Comprising of Sofia Lilja - vocals, Christer Åkerlund- guitar, Thomas Lindgren - guitar, Henrik Uhrbom - bass, David Algesten -drums, and Fredrik Åkerlund – keyboards, Nubian Rose are from (massive shock) Sweden and despite this debut album only just having emerged in Europe their record people feel the need to suggest that lead singer Sofia Lilja is, "a true rock icon." Whilst Mountain is a more than passable album and Ms Lilja certainly has a powerful voice let's turn down the hyperbole shall we?

Mountain is rooted in the 1980s, but in a good way in the sense that the emphasis is placed on good songs well played and well sung. The melodies weave their way into the listener's brain and get stuck; case in point being the opening song "Ever see Your face". There would have been a time where one could have seen Nubian Rose getting some serious attention from the music press just because of Ms Lilja's looks. Times have changed now and the band play a type of hard melodic rock which these ears really enjoy but isn't exactly in step with what "the kids" are listening to. That said, if you like Whitesnake,Dio and their ilk there's a lot to enjoy on this record and I'm sure there'll be more to come from the band.
