Killing Joke: MMXII

I've always had a take it or (mostly) leave it relationship with Killing Joke but here I'm fairly in the take it camp. Yes they are a more than a little morose but when the key themes are political, anti-capitalist and dreaming of a fairer system the chances of a full-on laugh riot are fairly slim. What we do have is Killing Jokes' usual dense wall of sound which at times is almost dancey yet still definitely within the confines of rock.

The songs are mostly fairly concise and get straight to the point without space age tomfoolery so often associated with industrial rock. For me they key track is "Glitch" which deals with how the human race has become too dependent on technology. Strangely, this tune is arguably the most Killing Joke effort on the album. If this was their first album I have a feeling it would be hailed as a work of genius. As it is, for a band well into its fourth decade, this is better than we would have any right to expect. I'm still not the world's biggest fan but this is one of the more pleasant surprises of the year.
