The band with the monumental name Obelyskkh are back with their sophomore effort White Lightnin' which spells doomsday tripping and dark psychedelia galore.
From beginning to end, the album oozes crushingly heavy, often primitive, riffs on top of heavy drum beats. Falling somewhere between doom metal and sludge metal, White Lightnin' features both aggressive hard core screaming and monotonous introvert murmuring. The latter tye of vocals goes well with the atmosphere of the music that Obelyskkh represents, while the former might be too harsh for some. I personally prefer more melodic vocals in doom metal, although I can tolerate growls in certain cases – the hardcore style of vocals associated with sludge metal does not sit well with me though, and I do think that the more aggressive vocals on this album are at odds with its otherwise spacey and psychedelic atmosphere.
The music itself – the beats, the riffs and the guitar solos, as well as the spacey effect overlaid on top, have an almost hypnotic effect, and fans of heavy, sludgy, psychedelic doom should definitely get a hold on this album.
