Foreshadowing, The: Second World

Now signed to Metal Blade Records, Italian gothic doom act The Foreshadowing are unleashing their latest platter of melancholia, titled Second World. Produced by the legendary Dan Swano, Second World instantly sounds better sonically than their previous effort Oinos, which you can hear right from the opening cut "Havoc" with its powerful riffs, haunting keyboards, intricate drum fills, and the gothic styled vocals of Marco Benevento. "Outcast" contains some textured guitar patterns and crushing riffs over which Benevento can soar over, and "The Foresaken Son" sees the band picking up the pace with some booming doom riffs straight out of the Candlemass and My Dying Bride playbook. Elsewhere, look for poignant waves of sorrow on "Aftermaths", walls of melodic keyboards & heavy riffs on the memorable title track, and plenty of spooky atmospherics along with bombastic doom on "Reverie Is A Tyrant".

If you haven't been bowled over by The Foreshadowing's style of morose, gothic doom in the past, chances are Second World probably won't make you an excited fan either, but for those who have dug their previous releases, this one has better production values and many more layers and textures. It's a keeper in my book.
