Bauda: Euphoria... Of Flesh, Men and the Great Escape
I've been putting off reviewing Bauda's Euphoria... Of Flesh, Men and the Great Escape. You see, I reviewed this album a few months ago for another publication and was really not impressed. In fact, although I did mention several positive things about the album, I gave it a low score. Not only did I give the album a low score, I actually found it a chore to listen to. This is despite the fact that the album is well played and any review I have seen of the album has been extremely positive. However, I figured I would give the album another fair shake this time as it had been three months since I reviewed the album and there was always the chance I could change my mind.
So, did I like it any better this time? The answer simply is no. In fact this time I found the album to even be more of a chore to get through.
I really should like this album, I really should. It has some beautiful, haunting melodies and some great arrangements at times. The music straddles a line between atmospheric rock and metal and the vocals are fantastic. However, despite all of this the songs are just too damn long for me.
Now, don't be thinking that I must be some ADD case because I said the songs were too long. I do like many long songs, however in the case of Bauda the songs seem unnecessarily long. Kind of like the band decided an extra 5 minutes should be tacked on for no particular reason at all. The result is that while the songs are actually quite good (Some even borderline brilliant), they just couldn't hold my attention. A case in point is the song "Humanimals" which starts off brilliantly with an excellent Cure meets metal sound, but then just goes on and on and on until it is over 10 minutes long. Personally I lost interest at about the 5 minute mark and really don't think the song needed to go on for longer.
Obviously there are going to be people who think I'm nuts and that these songs sound great with the length that they are at. That's totally fine and they are totally entitled to their opinion as well. I however, really hope the band shaves off some of the excess length with their future albums. If they do, they could make some stunning albums. This one however is just way too long for its own good.
