Jamison, Jimi: Never Too Late

Now I count myself as a bit of a Jimi Jamison fanboy; I even own and like his debut CD When Love Comes Down, I really love the Jimi Jamison's Suvivor record Empires but even I would take the latest hyperbolic Frontiers Records' press kit with a massive pinch of salt. Only within a small cadre of melodic rock fans would Jamison, "Often referred to as one of the American top Rock vocalists." The great unwashed probably wouldn't even know that he sung the theme to Baywatch. Having said all that he is a fabulous vocalist and this, yet another Erik Mårtensson produced project is a wonderful album and Jamison continues his excellent form from last year's Kimball/Jamison platter.

In their quaint way Frontiers suggest that, "This album rocks really hard at times; that's probably the heaviest Jamison has ever been involved with since the times of Cobra. Still the melodies are going to haunt you and stay in your mind for a long time." I wholly agree with the superb melodies in each and every song, however, this is much less heavy than Mårtensson's Toby Hitchcock album or this year's Eclipse effort. What we do have though is a wonderful set of melodic rock gems including the majestic title track and the utterly stupendous closer "Walk On (Wildest Dreams)". The players on Never Too Late are Erik Mårtensson - Lead & Rhythm Guitar, Bass, Keyboards & Backing Vocals, Magnus Ulfstedt – Drums, Jonas Öijvall - HammondB3, Piano & Analog Synthesizers and Magnus Henriksson - Lead Guitar on "Street Survivor" & "Heaven Call Your Name." Special mention must go to Jonas Öijvall who does his best Roy Bittan throughout to give the songs an extra special toughness. In a tremendous year for AOR this is another momentous album.
