Norksa: Norksa
When I was quite a bit younger there was a popular early rap song called "The Freaks Come Out at Night." I remember that song mostly because I was once with some friends and, just as we passed a group of punk rockers, one of my friends started singing it--easily within earshot. Nothing happened, but part of me worried the punks would beat us up, just for the heck of it.
As I put on this CD, I remembered that event, probably because one of the tracks is called "They Mostly Come at Night." I liked the mental connection between "The Freaks Come Out at Night" and the idea that these creatures, whatever they are, come out "mostly" at night. Two songs with different purposes and intentions, but, to me, such connections are always fun to make. As for the song itself, I loved its slow tempo, its brooding atmosphere, and its haunting guitar effects. For me, this track was the best on the album, a song that showcases the doom and sludge components this band has to offer.
I was also very fond of the closing track, "Two Coins for the Ferryman." Since I was little, I loved the idea of meeting a skeleton ferryman waiting to take me away from the world of the living. Check out the slow opening on this one, another example of the way Norska establishes a dark, foreboding mood over the whole thing.
Norska is a terrific new release, one that is sure to please fans to doom metal, especially when it's played with a sense for the dark spaces that lurk between the notes. Fans of more driving metal will find moments of pure riffage, moments that will set their head to banging.
