Ten: Heresy and Creed

After the long gap before the release of last year's Stormwarning, Ten have been exceptionally sprightly in knocking out Heresy and Creed in spritely fashion. The band now have a settled line up of main man Gary Hughes - vocals, guitars and programming alongside Dan Mitchell – guitars with John Halliwell – guitars, Steve McKenna - bass guitar and the brilliantly named Darrel Treece-Birch – keyboards. Max Yates provides mighty drums and percussion. Having seen them play live I can testify that this is a very solid line up and I can further confirm that Heresy and Creed is a very solid if not classic Ten album.

Take away the opening instrumental and you have a strong if slightly overlong album with some real highlights such as the double-whammy of "Arabian Knights" followed by the magnificent "Gunrunning", both of which get the full range of Dan Mitchell's flashy technique all over them – not that he's flashy just for the sake of it, oh no, he's very fluid and plays within the confines of the songs yet fully expresses himself. Such is mastery of what he does I don't think I'll even mention Vinny Burns in this review...oops.

I could possibly not bother with "The Priestess" but other than that this is typically Gary Hughes near the top of his game in terms of songwriting. In the hands of more mainstream artists more than one of these tracks especially "Lady Ante"..., sorry "Another Rainy Day" would be potential hits. For the second Ten record in a row Dennis Ward sprinkles his magic fairy dust over the production and rather like the current Bond film (Skyfall) it's good to see a British institution in such rude health after a long time in the game.
