Malfeitor: Dum Morior Orior
Malfeitor have in one shape or form been hammering out their vision of death metal for nigh on twenty years now, although their previously released 1987 Demo would suggest an even longer legacy. Making it is no surprise that this Italian trio are no slouches at what they do. Although it is a little disappointing that their chosen endeavour, falls so close to what many have done before them. Entombed, early Sepultura, or Carnage readily pounce to mind, with galloping kick drums, growled spoken voice and down-tuned, in your face guitars. However the deciding factor in how heavily you'll invest in the well worn vision of the genre conjured up by second album Dum Morior Orior, will come down to your own personal dedication to all things death. The band certainly wring the living daylights out of "Exile From Sanity", "Death, The Dead And Me", and "Psychosis", it's just that you can't deny they all sound slightly too familiar - even on first listen. Although that said, there isn't actually a bad track in sight or sound.
Every one of the eleven ragings on this album howls in your ear while biting off your face and they are all delivered with conviction. Not too surprising when you consider that all three band members have also been associated with black metal mayhemers Aborym. Meaning they leave nothing on the sidelines where effort is concerned. However once the album is all over, there's an underlying feeling of emptiness and no matter how many times I place myself on the torture rack for this release, none of the brutal machinations stick in my head. Good while it is menacingly going about its business, Dum Morior Orior lacks that splash of inspiration that keeps drawing you back for more. Possibly because you know you already have this sort of stuff in your collection, done by countless more masterful bands.
Even with the long serving nature of Malfeitor, this is still only their second full length album. On those terms, Dum Morior Orior isn't a disappointment that spells long term gloom. Instead it is a better than decent point from which they can grow into something that will hopefully see them stand out from the crowd.
