Most people think of sludge metal as slow and doom-laden music, but we have to remember that sludge was originally a combination of hardcore punk and doom metal. While many prominent sludge bands embrace the heavier and slower side of sludge, there are bands, like I Exist and Hard Charger, who take their sludge in a more uptempo and hardcore-oriented direction.
Fistula's latest release Northern Aggression belongs to the category of more aggressive and hardcore-informed sludge. Make no mistake, there are crushingly heavy passages, but more often than not do Fistula make use of hardcorish and crusty aggressive and uptempo passages. There are even some blastbeats and grindcore sections every now and then. The vocals are on the harsher side, consisting of angry yell, and this – needless to say – fits the primitive and aggressive sound of the music.
If you like your sludge dirty and aggressive, but still appreciate the heavy riffage, then you should give this sludgecore-attack of a release a listen.
