Seed of Sadness: Seed of Sadness (EP)
On their debut EP Greek melodic metallers Seed of Sadness follow in the footsteps of such renowned bands as Nightwish, Xandria or Within Temptation. And I'm not saying this just because all these bands are fronted by ladies or play in a rather similar style. It's also because they all tend to record quality music that never disappoints true fans of this sort of bombastic, catchy metal.
This 5-track release definitely shows that the band has no difficulty finding the right melodies to keep the listeners hooked from the very first notes of each single composition. And the musicianship is nothing short of great, really, with Jimmy Nore's guitar tirelessly pumping adrenaline into each subsequent song, Firewind's Bob Katsionis' mighty keyboards adding more scope to them and Stellaria's strong voice shaping them into unbelievably catchy little beasts. The opener "Remnant of a Dying Smile" is a perfect example of the band's style, but in fact all other songs on this EP turn out to be equally addictive. And eerily similar to each other, too. Which is perhaps the only weakness of Seed of Sadness' debut material. I mean, the five tracks do go by as if they were just one epic composition. Sure, some of them have slower intros that let us distinguish them from the opener that punches you in the face right away, but I bet that at some point many listeners will have problems recognizing between the tracks. Mind you, this also means that there are no boring fillers or lifeless ballads here that would force you to saw your ears off. This is nice, energetic stuff all around – just don't expect the unexpected.
I'm very much interested in finding out what this band comes up with next. A full-length album will demand more variety and I think one or two real curveballs would be welcome, but for some reason I've got really good feelings about the future of Seed of Sadness. This EP clearly shows they've got huge potential.
