Moor, The: Year Of The Hunger

Now this is an album that is quite diverse genre mixture called Year Of The Hunger from a relatively new Italian group known as The Moor. The Moor came to be in 2009 when vocalist/guitarist Enrico Longhin and Davide Carraro also a guitarist together formed the band. After having experienced Year Of The Hunger even though the band may be relatively new to the scene its members do sound most experienced.

Upon listening to Year Of The Hunger and as the songs progress it encouraged thoughts of both Opeth and the way they present that fantastic assortment of different styles musically; both light and harder edged and those vocals both clean and growls that all come together so well. The likes of German metal band Rage also came to mind, once The Moor perform in a heavier pumping metal manner with "Covered" which came as a real surprise given what preceded this tune. Maybe Opeth also influenced this band's name as "The Moor" is the opening track title from Opeth's Still Life album.

The Moor are capable performers and know how to create appealing balanced music as they don't over do it and there are some great performances on this album especially guitar wise. As mentioned above they are a diverse band as you anticipate what each song may reveal like any good progressive release. Take "Hyperuranium" for example as it goes from vibrant hard rock to a before to a calm before the storm style as the song erupts and those darker vocals come into play followed by more tasteful music. Year Of The Hunger is not an album the listener will tune out to, there is just too much compelling music and variety on offer.

Year Of The Hunger succeeds at delivering alluring blend of progressive rock and metal, though it tends to steers towards the rock/hard rock more so than the metal. The Moor are a band who are looking outside the box and not limiting themselves to one distinct style.
